Album Art

2015

OCAD University

This project explores album artwork as a system rather than a single static image. I was interested in how typography, lyrics, and visual structures could be used to translate the emotional and rhythmic qualities of music into spatial compositions. Instead of focusing on a central image, the designs rely on typographic fragments, negative space, and structured layouts to communicate the atmosphere of the music.
The primary composition spreads lyrical excerpts across a deep red field, creating a landscape of text that behaves almost like a map. Different clusters of lyrics form visual rhythms that mirror the pacing and structure of songs within the album. Some passages are arranged in dense blocks while others stretch across the space in thin lines, allowing silence and negative space to play an active role in the composition. This approach reflects the dynamics of music—moments of intensity contrasted with pauses and quieter passages.

Additional elements of the project translate lyrical and textual data into graphic systems. One composition converts typographic characters into a network-like grid, forming a maze of interconnected pathways that suggests the complexity and layered structure of the album. Another piece organizes typographic information within a circular format resembling a compact disc, referencing the physical medium while simultaneously visualizing encoded data.

Together, these works investigate how album artwork can move beyond illustration to become an abstract interpretation of sound and language. By treating lyrics as visual material and exploring systems of repetition, rhythm, and spatial arrangement, the project creates a series of designs that reflect the structure and emotional tone of the music itself.
