O' Noir Toronto

Editorial Concept

2014

OCAD University

This editorial magazine spread explores the concept of sensory dining through a bold, modern layout inspired by the immersive experience of O' Noir, a restaurant where guests dine in complete darkness. My intention with this project was to translate the idea of heightened sensory awareness into a visual narrative that guides the reader through the story while maintaining a clean, contemporary editorial aesthetic.

The design uses a minimal colour palette of black, white, and vibrant yellow to create strong visual contrast and establish hierarchy. Yellow functions as a strategic accent—highlighting quotes, key information, and structural elements—while also symbolizing illumination within darkness, reinforcing the theme of dining without sight.

Typography plays a central role in the composition. Large, bold headlines anchor each spread and create an immediate point of entry for the reader, while structured columns of body text provide rhythm and readability. Pull quotes and highlighted passages break up dense text areas and encourage engagement, guiding the reader’s eye across the layout.

Photography is used to complement the narrative and evoke the sensory richness of the food. Close-up imagery emphasizes texture, colour, and presentation, inviting the viewer to imagine taste and smell even within a visual medium. The opening spread introduces the concept dramatically, while subsequent pages balance editorial storytelling with featured restaurant profiles and supporting imagery.

Overall, this project demonstrates my approach to editorial design: combining strong typographic hierarchy, strategic use of colour, and dynamic layout structures to create a visually engaging and conceptually cohesive reading experience.
