Typography in Punk

Poster Design

2012

OCAD University

This poster explores the visual tension between structure and disruption through experimental typography and collage. The composition centres on the word PUNK, fragmented and layered with varying textures, weights, and orientations to echo the raw, rebellious spirit associated with punk culture.

I used torn-paper forms and distressed surfaces to create a sense of physical rupture within the page. These elements interrupt the otherwise controlled grid-like background, symbolizing resistance against rigid systems and conventional design order. The overlapping layers mimic the aesthetic of DIY posters and zines, referencing the handmade visual language historically connected to underground music and counterculture movements.

The typography intentionally shifts in scale, angle, and clarity. While PUNK commands the visual hierarchy, the surrounding text—Typographic Exhibition and the location details—appears partially embedded within the torn textures, suggesting information that emerges from chaos rather than existing outside of it.

Working primarily in black and white allowed me to focus on texture, rhythm, and contrast. The restrained palette reinforces the raw and uncompromising tone of the piece while emphasizing the tactile qualities of the ripped surfaces and layered marks.

This work reflects my interest in expressive typography, material experimentation, and the intersection between graphic design and cultural attitude. It aims to capture the disruptive energy of punk not only through language, but through the very structure of the composition itself.
